For preventative measures
Hip Displasia is genetic---however there are many experts that recommend things to help the dog to delay effects of the disease including limiting the dog's jumping, standing on hind legs, and general execissve exercise. There are hopes that the effects of the genetic disease will be minimized also...this can be done from day 1 of the ownership of your dog and is more effective I would imagine in preventing. Once the dog displays the genetic disease, it would probably be best to seek the direction of a veterinarian so that the dog can be evaluted on a case by case basis
General information I know, but some may not be aware of this
I've limited Mojo's jumping and standing on his hind legs. I help him down from the couch and bed and also avoid stairs. He has something else wrong with his hips (a bit bowlegged and minimal slipping patella) and we notice this minimizes flare ups.
We also keep his weight low and give him a regular low impact exercise
